Warmia and Mazuria (Warmia i Mazury)
The region is called the Land of Thousand Lakes, but in fact it is even richer, because it prides itself on over two thousand lakes with the area of more than one hectare; small, middle and vast - such as Śniardwy and Mamry, each over one hundred square kilometres. The unique marvel of the Great Mazurian Lakes consists in the fact that, linked with rivers and streams, they create a system of connected vessels, find themselves in the area originally undulating due to the glacier and surrounded by vast forest complexes.
For this reason Warmia and Mazuria are the ideal vacation destination place for yachtsmen, windsurfers, canoeists, cyclists and horse riding lovers and for those who long for rest among forests, in a chosen centre or on a remote agro tourist farm.
Simultaneously, the land preserved severa fascinating reminiscences after its distant and complicated history. Frombork with the Episcopal palace, where Nicolas Copernicus used to live and work. All the circle of fortified castles, a reminder of the Teutonic State reigning once here, the monumental Boyen fortress in Giżycko, as an inheritance after the Prussian reign and last but not least, the Wolf Earthwork (Wilczy Szaniec) in Gierłoża, Adolf Hitler's underground headquarters from the times of the Second World War.
